360 Horizons: Fearless Futures in Immersive Media

A year-long programme supporting Indigenous and equity-deserving creators to expand their practices through immersive media, shared learning and new relationships across Canada.

The programme

Story carried in relationship.

The immersive-media landscape - including fulldome theatres, 360° video, virtual reality and spatial audio - can be understood as an extension of how story has long been carried: through experience, relationship and connection to place. Knowledge can live in land, sound, movement and the spaces between people.

Developed by the Indigenomics Institute and MOVE37XR, 360 Horizons brings emerging and established Indigenous and equity-deserving creators into a shared space for learning, experimentation and development. It asks how existing creative languages, stories and ways of working might move through dome, projection, VR, spatial-audio and other immersive forms - toward futures people can experience and feel.

An extended framework for making

Participants do not need to arrive with an established immersive practice or a fully formed project. Across the programme, they will be supported to explore new tools and formats while carrying forward the knowledge, questions and creative approaches already present in their work.

How the programme unfolds

Cohort development

A constellation of practices.

The cohort is being shaped through nomination, outreach, interviews and dialogue with prospective participants and mentors. Rather than selecting artists in isolation, 360 Horizons is building a constellation of practices, disciplines, experiences and perspectives that can learn from, challenge and support one another.

Outreach and conversations continue through the SCI_ART launch period, with the final cohort expected to be announced in December 2026. The programme will then be refined in response to the selected artists’ interests, existing skills, project directions and identified needs.

Mentorship & exchange

Learning through practice.

An ongoing virtual cohort is paired with in-person gatherings in Vancouver, Montréal and Coastal BC. Workshops, technical testing, peer exchange, one-to-one and group mentorship, and production support will accompany projects from early experiments through development and creation.

Artists will learn alongside immersive-media practitioners, cultural leaders and mentors while building connections within Canada’s growing immersive-media ecosystem and international dome networks. The focus is not tool training alone, but creative confidence, practical fluency, relationships and frameworks for helping shape a changing field.

Future presentation

From experiment to circulation.

The programme supports creators toward new immersive works, with opportunities for technical testing and presentation in dome and other immersive environments. Completed and in-progress projects will be shared through screenings, exhibitions and partnership events across MOVE37XR’s cultural, immersive-media and festival networks in 2027 and 2028.

Building the conditions for new work.

360 Horizons is developed in partnership between the Indigenomics Institute and MOVE37XR. Its launch and cohort-development process is being developed with partner organizations across the MOVE37XR Dreaming Node Network and within British Columbia’s emerging immersive-media ecosystem, including through the ongoing Immersive Art Ecosystem Knowledge Exchange & Symposium initiative.

The programme is designed to stay responsive to the artists and the work they want to develop. As the cohort takes shape, the workshop, mentorship and technical-training programme will be refined with and for the people participating in it.
